With United’s key encounter away to Billericay looming, defender Kyle Cameron talked about what he expects from the Essex-based side.
“We looked at this one a while ago as a big game,” said Cameron.
“They sort of tailed off a bit and then picked back up in recent weeks so it’s top of our agenda to win this game, to get the three points and move on really.”
During the Plainmoor clash back in November, United lead 2-0 at the break, before a change in tactics brought Billericay back into the game and earned them a share of the points.
“They brought the big man on, and it kind of changed the game. We’ve learned how to deal with that I think, we’ve looked back at games where people have done that, and we understand now how to deal with that. A change of personnel doesn’t really matter, as the players that they’re bringing in are going to be quality. They’re pushing for the play-offs, and pushing to finish as high as they can. I think this will be a tough game no matter who they put out on the field, the eleven men will be a tough test and hopefully we’ll come away with three points.”
Despite the team’s impressive attacking play this season, Cameron sees a recent lack of clean sheets as an area for improvement.
“It’s been a little while since I’ve had a clean sheet. As a defender when you’re looking to progress, clean sheets is ultimately what will do it for you. I think in the past few games we’ve been letting in easy goals, been a bit of a pushover at the back. That’s something we’ve looked at as a group, as a defensive unit. That’s something that in the coming weeks we’ll definitely put right and I think that’ll be a big help for the title push. We are quite an attack-minded team, and we are going to leak a couple of chances but we need to deal with those chances and maybe up our work rate and energy on going back that way and not just forward. I think it’s just recovering our shape, and slowing the team down and not giving them easy chances.”
The Gulls defender is eager to draw a line under last Saturday’s defeat against Weston, and sees this weekend’s top-of-the-table clash as a perfect opportunity to set the record straight.
“It was a tough one. We came into it obviously thinking we were going to win the game, and hoping we were going to win the game. It was a top v bottom clash but that’s football for you, it doesn’t go your way and we just have to forget about that now and put it right on Saturday.”
