New Torquay United Head Coach Gary Owers was pleased with his side’s effort and application in today’s 1-1 draw at Holker Street.
United opened the scoring through James Gray in the 5th minute, but the Byron Harrison struck in injury time in the second half to snatch a point for the Bluebirds.
“[I was] pleased with attitude and application from the players” said Gary after the final whistle.
“I think as much as me and Martin could bring to the table in the two days that we’ve had them [the players], we’ve done. The biggest disappointment is that we couldn’t get over the line at the end. We’re two minutes away from our first win of the season which would have given everyone a massive boost. But we’ve got a point away from home and if we win next week then we’re going in the right direction.
“I thought the lads were great. We really started well. We got an early goal and that was deserved. Just as the game fell into the closing stages we got a bit too deep.
“The things that Barrow are known for are long throws and balls into the box, and unfortunately we got one of those goals.
“People have got to learn how to win games. I’m sure when I look at it I’ll pick something up in the thirty or forty seconds prior to the goal that we cold have done better. It might have been a throw-in where we went short instead of playing percentages. Sometimes you just win ugly. You kick it in the corner and you grind out that win.”
Ryan Higgins was named on the teamsheet for United but was unwell during the warm up and didn’t make the match day squad. George Dowling suffered a hamstring injury and was substituted early in the game.
“I’m not here to make excuses” added Gary. “The lads got on with it. We should have won and we didn’t so we’re going to try again next week.
“We’ve got a week to work with the players, hopefully we can get a few more of our ideas into them.”
“We’ll work with them, definitely. They’ve worked hard.
“I think there is a reserve game [away to Cullompton] where the players that didn’t play will get an opportunity to impress.”
Owers is hoping to add more players to his squad soon.
“Hopefully I am close to bringing possibly two players in on Monday or Tuesday, which are needed now because of the injurt situation.
“Thank you to the supporters that travelled up here today, I think that’s important.
“I was at Bromley on Tuesday and there was a great following there and even further away today. We appreciate that, and hopefully they have gone away safe in the knowledge that they have seen a little bit of improvement today.”
