Slough Town 0
United 0

ALEX Bass was the late hero for United, saving a penalty five minutes from time to secure a welcome point but a game the Gulls could have so easily won.

It is now just one goal conceded from United in five games but manager Gary Owers conceded his side need to back up defensive resilience with some more conviction in the forward areas.

An early scare for United when George Essuman was beaten to a header but the chance passed and the Gulls gradually grew into the game, with Brett Williams clipping an effort narrowly wide.

Samir Nabi was a constant thorn to the Slough defence but the game was generally scrappy, and Owers changed his approach by withdrawing Ben Wynter for Jason Banton in the bid to find some attacking impetus.

Ryan Dickson fired a free-kick over that was headed across goal by Jamie Reid, but nobody in place to convert the opening and a dour first period ended goalless.

Banton set the tone for a better second half when he shave the post with a left-foot drive and Williams also went close from distance. Reid, meanwhile, was stretching the Slough defence on a regular basis but the final pass could not be found.

Williams was denied by a fine save and United changed their formation in the closing stages in the search for a decisive goal. Andre Wright threatened with an effort and the rebound from Asa Hall was well saved.

United were undoubtedly the side in the ascendancy but that changed when Slough were awarded a penalty five minutes from time. Bass responded with his moment in the limelight, producing a fine save to earn a point and we move on to the visit of Hampton & Richmond next weekend.
