Having gained a new member to their fundraising team, Kit Manager Russell Cleave provided an update on the Club’s Prostate United 2023 challenge.
With Goalkeeping Coach Ken Griffiths joining Kit Manager / Sports Therapist Cleave and Sports Therapist Intern Josh Chubb in taking part in this year’s challenge, United’s terrific trio will be either running 10km or cycling 25km every day throughout the course of October, in order to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK, whilst at the same time, raising vital awareness of the disease itself.
After reaching the halfway-point in terms of the challenge itself and their own fundraising target, Russell took a few moments out to provide an update.
“It’s going alright so far,” explained United’s long-serving kitman.
“Kenny is a bit of a ‘lone ranger’ – he does his early in the morning, whilst me and Josh will fit ours in around training, either in the mornings or in the afternoons.
“The hardest part is when when you’re on a day off, and we have to get up and do the challenge! When you’re in work, you’re already up and doing things, you can plan it into your day a bit more, it’s just getting the challenge done. I can’t leave it until the end of the day.”
As Russell can testify though, it’s when the going gets tough that the well-known Torquay United team spirit really comes to the fore.
“When the task is hard, we’ll say ‘let’s do it together’, and we help each other through.
“We’re just over halfway towards our target of £300, and a little boost now would get us over the line just before the end. We’ve got 12 days left including today, we’ve got through the bulk of it, and we’re on the home stretch now, as me and Josh call it. We’re looking forward to November 1st!
“Overall, the charity has raised a lot of money, and from what I can gather on social media, it’s one of the best years so far, so it’s good.”
Prostate Cancer UK has a simple ambition – to stop prostate cancer damaging the lives of men and their families, with the disease being the most common cancer in men. Statistics show that 1 in all 8 men are diagnosed in their lifetime, or even more alarmingly, 1 in 4 black men.
Russell, Josh and Ken have set themselves a fundraising target of £300, and any United fans wishing to support them in their efforts, can do so by donating via their JustGiving page here.

To further highlight this very worthy cause, members of United’s Prostate United fundraising team, along with Phil Tearle from Prostate Cancer UK, will be the guests at TUAFC’s next Retro Gulls event, which will take place on Thursday, 26th October (2pm-4pm).
