Torquay United AFC is pleased to announce the appointment of Jordan Williams and Tim Smith as the Club Chaplains.

Sports Chaplaincy is commonplace in a number of sports including, Football, Rugby Union, and Rugby League, with Chaplains providing support and care, by permission, to those of faith or no faith, for the wellbeing of all involved in the community of sport.

The appointment of Jordan and Tim sees two long-time supporters of The Gulls take on this valued, and important, role at the Club, and will only serve to further strengthen the bond Torquay United AFC has with its local community.

Both spoke of their excitement regarding the new relationship, following their appointment at Plainmoor.

  • Jordan Williams

“We’re very excited to come and support the Club, the Club that we support ourselves, the Club that we come and watch, and the Club that we’re proud to be part of the local community.

“We’re really looking forward to supporting anybody associated to this Club, whether it be a fan, backroom staff or playing staff, whoever is in need with whatever is going on within their life, we’re looking to supporting and helping, and seeing this great Club continue to grow.”

  • Tim Smith

“I think from a pastoral point of view, if there’s an opportunity that someone wants to take, in terms of someone who can be a listening ear, like I can be, we’re able to do that, and we’re invited in by the Club in that sense.

“There’s a confidential nature to it, anyone with a particular need, then we can help when we are able to help, and hopefully this is something that will develop over a period of time.”

Nigel Manges, Pastoral Support Lead for South West at Sports Chaplaincy UK, went on to describe the growing presence of Chaplains within

“Sports Chaplaincy have Chaplains in everything from Horse Racing to Grand Prix Racing, Athletics, Gyms, Football, Rugby, Cricket, and we’re recognised with all the major authorities as well. We have several hundred Chaplains registered with Sports Chaplaincy UK, serving right across the country, and the majority of Football Clubs will have a Chaplain in place to offer support, and they have been invaluable in some very difficult situations.

“It’s great that we have two here, who are supporters if the club as well.”
