Steve Elswood’s team progressed to the next round of the FA Vitality Women’s Cup, after a convincing 9-1 victory over Feniton on Sunday.

TUWFC made the short trip up to East Devon to face Feniton Ladies in the Second Qualifying Round in this seasons FA Vitality Women’s Cup last Sunday, and with the Yellows coming up against several ex-Gulls a potential upset was very much on the agenda of the opposition. However a ruthless display from the first minute set out the ladies intentions, and from the kick off Tracey Cross came close with an attack straight through the Feniton defence.

That set the pattern for the next 89 minutes with the Gulls creating over 25 attempts on the opposing goal. United took the lead through influential midfielder Rhi Bailey who drove the ball low into the corner from 25 yards, with the second coming soon after from Becks McMullin, who picked up a loose ball on the edge of the area before curling a wonderful effort past the Feniton keeper to double United’s lead. A third goal wasn’t long in coming and it came with a long ball from Emma Hunt, who sent Ellie Bishop clear on the left and her pace and patience was there for all to see, as she slid it past the keeper to make it 3-0 to the Yellows with only five minutes gone.

The fourth goal was a stunner, coming from a corner kick that reached Bailey who volleyed the ball first time into the roof of the net with amazing technique for her second of the game.. The fifth came from skipper Jana Richards, who floated in a free kick which was met by Cross ghosting in behind to head the ball into the corner. A sixth came from Mia Preston, who floated in a fantastic cross-shot that curled into the top corner, and with the half time whistle bringing the first half proceedings to an end, United found themselves with a very comfortable 6-0 lead.

To their credit Feniton tightened up their defence and looked more of a threat when breaking forward at times in the second half, but United soon added more misery to their backline with Bishop outpacing the Feniton defence and squaring the ball for Preston, who smashed home her second of the game and the seventh for United. Feniton grabbed themselves a consolation goal, with a through ball in behind the Yellows backline to get the goal their never give up attitude deserved.

United came again with another series of attacks before grabbing the eighth through Daisy Self after a lovely through ball from Cross, before  the ninth and final goal came from the impressive Bishop who was fed in at an angle, and keeping her composure rolled the ball into the corner, and the Yellows comfortable passage into the Third Qualifying Round of the cup was complete, with a very pleasing attacking display.

Manager Steve Elswood reflected on the game saying:

“It was a lethal display, but we knew we would have to be professional throughout this game with a sloping pitch and former players against us. This could always have been a tricky game and a potential upset, but right from the start we attacked and some of our football at times was absolutely deadly.”

“I set the girls a target of winning the game and then to kick on with a ruthless attitude, which is to show what an attacking force we are  throughout the team. With so many different goal-scorers throughout the team it was a fantastic performance, and confidence is flowing through us at the moment which is evident to see. We’re looking forward to the next round and beyond this year and that performance has set us up nicely”

TUWFC have been given a home draw in the Third Qualifying Round against Royal Wootton Bassett Ladies, with that game scheduled to be played on Sunday 23rd October at Coach Road with a 2pm kick off.
