Young Gulls go marching on as Chris Todd’s U18 side produced a stellar display, with their 11-0 victory seeing the team continue their pursuit of the South-West Counties Youth League title.
A hat-trick from Brandon Quinn and a brace from Theo Cadby, accompanied by goals from Joe Edmonds, Jack Winsor, Jayden Gilbert, Sammy Stayt, skipper Alfie Collings, and Ben Aldous completed a dominant performance for United’s U18s.
United began in blustery conditions at South Devon 4G, and it didn’t take long for the home side to establish their lead. Quinn drove up the right flank before cutting inside and getting a low-driven effort off, and just as it looked as if it were going agonisingly wide, Edmonds was on hand at the far post to slot home.
Todd’s side continued to enjoy many chances in the early stages. Stayt was denied by the keeper in the 5th minute before chances from Gilbert and Winsor followed two minutes later.
The lead was doubled moments later when the United attack caught the Wimborne goalkeeper out as he tried to play out from the back, forcing his clearance to be deflected and picked up by Winsor who cooly slotted into the bottom left corner.
In the 12th minute Lewis Brooks drove into the left side of the box and as he was brought down, the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Quinn sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it three.
The Young Gulls fourth came from a great set piece on 19 minutes. Quinn drove down the right flank before his cross found a rising Cadby in the centre who placed his header past the goalkeeper, after only being on the pitch for two minutes.
United continued to enjoy much of the possession and created numerous chances and ten minutes later it was 5-0. Quinn drilled a low-driven effort home from just inside the box.
Even at 5-0 up, the Young Gulls continued to press high, with Edmonds and Quinn busy on either wing, chances continued to arise.
In the 39th minute, after rattling the bar moments before, Cadby was brought down in the box chasing the rebound and United were awarded another penalty. Quinn stepped up and secured his hattrick and the side’s sixth.
Three minutes before the break Edmonds drove up the left flank before squaring for Gilbert at the far post whose first effort was saved by the goalkeeper, but the youngster was on hand to bundle home from the rebound.
On the verge of half time, Stayt struck to see his side enter the interval 8-0 up. He drove forward before drilling his shot goalward, the Wimborne keeper got a hand to the ball, but the shot was so well hit that the number one was unable to stop it.
After making numerous changes to the starting eleven and the formation at the break, Todd’s Gulls continued to press high.
Thirteen minutes after the restart, forward Cadby was brought down on the left side of the box and the referee pointed to the spot once more. Cadby stood up to convert from the spot, sending the keeper the wrong way with a low-driven effort into the bottom left corner.
Todd’s side hit double digits in the 60th minute. A great run by Cadby saw the young starlet beat the keeper before he drilled a low shot against the right post, but it fell to an advancing Collings who fired home. Fifteen minutes later substitute Aldous struck to make it 11-0.
Speaking after the game, Manager Chris Todd said:
“Positive [thoughts] regardless of the result, there was a lot of goals scored, we were at it and really saw the game off in the first half. I think it’s difficult to come out in the second half when the scoreline is so big, but they kept their professionalism and attitude, and I was really positive with that to be honest with you.”
With the victory seeing his side stay two points off the top of the league with two games in hand on the leaders, Todd paid tribute to the team and has his sights set on looking ahead to the remainder of the season:
“I said to the lads, if you win the next four, there’s a good chance you’re going to go and win it, so you’ve got to keep going and if they continue to do that, credit to themselves, they’ll get the rewards they deserve.”
