In what was a fantastic weekend for the Club’s Youth Department, United’s Under-16s rounded off a remarkable season by winning their JPL South West title.
Having been defeated just once throughout the course of the 2023/24 campaign, our exciting young side went into their game at Bridgwater having already built up a healthy lead over nearest challengers Mid Somerset RTC, however after running out 6-3 winners in Somerset, the Young Gulls matched the Club’s Under-18 side by making it two championship titles on the same day.
For Head of Youth, Robbie Herrera, the success of the U16s came as no surprise.
“The Under-16s have been great, they’ve had a really good season,” said Herrera.
“They’ve got a good squad, good squad depth, and they’ve played some good football. The coaches have been great. We’ve got Jordan Thomas, Justin Yeates and Matt Hard, who have all worked extremely hard to get the boys to where they are with their perseverance and hard work.
“The boys have shown up well, and a number of them have gone up into the Under-18s this season, so there has been decent progression, and hopefully it will continue.”
U16s coach Yeates was equally wholesome in his praise for the team.
“We’ve had five of the lads step up and play with the Under-18s, and it’s a great achievement.
“We’ve only lost one game all season, we have had seven players from our squad represent Devon this year as well, which is an unbelievable achievement.”
On behalf of all of the Under -16s players, coaches and staff, all at Torquay United would like to congratulate you all on a remarkable season!
