Torquay United is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Club director, Mervyn Balson.

Merv was a devoted member of the Yellow Army, and after following the team home and away with his wife Val for many years, he stepped up to form part of the consortium that came to the aid of the Club during the summer of 2015.

After serving the Club at boardroom level, the couple continued to support their beloved Football Club in much the same way as they had done before, cheering the team on from their seats in Bristow’s Bench, in addition to backing the club through sponsorship, with former player and Interim Manager Aaron Downes just one of the United favourites to benefit from their continued support of the Club.

The club will be giving supporters the opportunity to join us in paying tribute – and thanks – to Merv at our opening game of the 2024/25 season against Enfield Town on 10th August, when a minute’s applause will be held prior to kick-off.

In the meantime, the thoughts of everyone at Plainmoor go out to Val and all of the Balson family at this very sad time.

Thanks for everything, Merv.
