Members of TUAFC were yesterday on hand to help celebrate the return of a much-missed community asset at King George V Playing Fields in Watcombe.
With the original plaque – first erected at the gates of the playing fields as a memorial to King George V – sadly stolen in 2016, the unveiling of the replacement plaque this week was certainly a cause for celebration for members of the local community, with Mervyn Benney delighted to mark the occasion by cutting the ceremonial ribbon.
For Mervyn, who was in attendance with fellow Club representatives Jo Harris and Amanda Counter, King George V Playing Fields holds a special place in his heart, and he now looks forward to future generations sharing in his passion for one of the area’s best open green spaces.
“It’s a life history,” said the United’s Life President.
“I can remember being here just after 16, maybe before that, because I played for Hele Spurs, but then I took up refereeing and I’ve refereed on here so many times, I couldn’t tell you!
“I refereed all over the place, but they mainly sent me here to cut the travelling down, and of course, I know a lot of the old clubs. Upton Athletic is one of the clubs that started in the minor leagues, and they went right up to the Premier League, and now they’re still up there high.
“I think the ground is wonderful. It’s a lovely big field, so you’re well off the road, and it can be used for anything – you could even have a carnival here!”
TUAFC would like to place on record its thanks to everyone that attended yesterday’s unveiling, to help highlight the importance of this valuable resource to the local community.
