TUWFC got their season up and running on Sunday afternoon, as Steve Elswood’s side beat Poole Town 5-2 at Coach Road.
A quickfire double set Torquay on their way midway through the first-half, as Emma Hunt headed home Ocean Latto’s corner on 24 minutes, before Danni Wyatt fed on an Ellie Bishop pass to double United’s lead just moments later.
That was the way it stayed until the interval, but once the action got back underway, Elswood’s side extended their lead in similar fashion, with Tracey Cross bagging a swift brace, first by profiting off another Latto corner on 50 minutes, before slotting home from close range six minutes later, after Rhi Bailey’s 18-yard effort struck the woodwork.
An improved second-half showing from the visitors did get some reward with twenty minutes to go, as Holly Weaver-Coles drove through the centre of The Gulls’ backline before slotting low past United goalkeeper Emma Ayres.
Up until that point, forward Bishop had endured a somewhat frustrating afternoon against the team from Dorset, however, just seconds later she had restored the four-goal advantage for her side, as last year’s leading scorer outwitted the Town backline by taking down a long ball forward from Kiara Robins, before firing confidently into the roof of the net.
Sacha Paynter did notch another consolation for Poole in the 80th minute to add a measure of respectability to the scoreline, yet wasn’t enough to deprive Torquay of their first points of 2022/23.
