With the Yellow Army’s fantastic support providing the perfect accompaniment to United’s recent good form, boss Gary Johnson paid tribute to the togetherness displayed by the whole Club over the past few weeks.
“We know the players are with us, we haven’t imploded as a Club. The Club has been very, very supportive – and that’s not me trying to save my job, by the way – I’m too old and too grey for that,” quipped Johnson.
“They’ve been very supportive, the players have worked their socks off, my staff have worked their socks off, and so we’ve not cheated in any way at all, and if you know that, and we know we have tried to do the right things as a Club, you know that there is nothing else, other than the performance on the pitch.
“It’s the same as trying to get somebody promoted, when you’re fighting for the Play-Offs, or you’re in the semi-final of the Play-Offs – like when we were against Notts County. It’s sort of like the same feelings to try and get out of relegation, as it is if you are trying to get promoted. Either way you are totally devastated if the worst happens, in both situations.
“We are a Club that is together, that’s for sure, and that’s important. We are not going into it with everyone arguing with each other, or everybody pointing fingers at each other, or the Club, or the Board, or the other players, or even the management.
“Certainly as a Club we are pretty close, and we all want the same thing for our fantastic supporters, and that is we want to keep them in the National League. It didn’t look like it the other night, but they were there in their numbers again, and that’s our motivation, making sure that the supporters that have been supporters forever at Torquay get their wish, and stay in the National League.”
