TUWFC picked up another valuable point on the road on Sunday afternoon, as they fought out an entertaining 3-3 draw away to Bishop’s Lydeard.
Having fallen behind to an early goal, Steve Elswood’s side were back on level terms soon after, as Ocean Latto’s left-wing cross-shot evaded all comers in the 18-yard box, before ending up in the back of the Lydeard net.
Things got even better just before the break, as another teasing delivery from the left flank ran across the six-yard box, allowing last season’s top-scorer Ellie Bishop to switch the ball onto her left boot at the back post, before firing home to make it 2-1.
Emma Ayres was called into action to make one superb near-post parry, however the lead remained intact until the break.
Following the change of ends however, the hosts upped their game.
After being outplayed by United during the first 45 minutes, the Somerset side began taking the game to Torquay, and duly found themselves back on level terms via a free-kick to set up an interesting finale.
It looked as if the home side may have taken all three points with ten minutes remaining, as a long-distance caught out United goalkeeper Ayres from all of 30 yards.
However, Elswood’s injury-ravaged side never know when they are beaten, and once again displayed quality and desire in equal measure with five minutes left on the clock to pick up a deserved point.
A long ball down the left channel left Bishop with plenty to do, however after outpacing and outwitting a retreating defender, the winger darted inside the box before slipping the ball into the net from a tight angle to round things off at 3-3.
After the game, TUWFC’s boss paid tribute to his side’s efforts.
“We went to what we knew was going to be tough opposition on a sloping pitch, we knew what we were going to get – it was going to be physical and direct,” said Elswood.
“We went there with four key players missing from the squad, and two substitutes that were 16, but overall the ladies showed, character, heart and determination, coming back twice, to get the positive result I think we deserved.
“A point is okay, a point we take, the two sides above us also took a point today, so no-one’s really dropped anything, but overall I’m delighted with the effort and the attitude that the ladies showed, and we thoroughly deserved a point.
“We go into another key game against Bristol Rovers next weekend, with hopefully two of those injury-hit players back next Sunday, which will hopefully bolster our squad again.
“Overall, I’m absolutely delighted with the performance and the point, and that point could really be key at the end of the season. I’m very, very happy with the performance in what was a real challenge today, and I thought we stood up and were counted.
“No-one let us down today. I’m very pleased.”
