United manager Gary Johnson provided the following assessment to his side’s 1-0 Buildbase FA Trophy win at Chesham United.
“I’m pleased that we’ve got through to the next round of the FA Trophy,” began Johnson.
“It wasn’t the most aesthetically beautiful game I’ve ever seen – a little bit down to conditions, a little but down to Chesham working hard and trying to stay in the game, and a little bit down to us not getting to our level of performance.
“However, there’s a spirit there, that’s for sure, so we know we can rely on that when we need it, when teams are putting us under pressure on occasions.”
Apart from making safe progress through to Round 4 thanks to Josh Umerah’s second-half strike, The Gulls boss was delighted with a number of his players gaining some much-needed game time, ahead of a busy festive period.
“The main thing today was that I was able to give quite a few players the minutes they needed. You look at Armani, it’s great that he’s been able to play an hour. Moxey, it’s great for him to play an hour, and Busey hasn’t had a lot of football, so he got his 90 minutess. Josh and Bill got 90 minutes – those people that haven’t played enough minutes yet.
“We’ve won the game whilst bringing people back, not just from injury. People like Jake, Fraser, Gaz – they haven’t played that much football until recently because they were injured for quite a long time.
“It was good for them to get another game, a result, in preparation for the Christmas games.”
