United boss Gary Johnson reflected on a job well done on Saturday evening, after seeing his side chalk up a 2-0 win at Southport to seal The Gulls’ spot in the last eight of the Buildbase FA Trophy.

“I’m obviously very pleased to get through to the quarter finals of the FA Trophy, we’re in it to try and win it,” said Johnson.

“Two goals is good, they beat Halifax in the previous round, so they were no mugs, and they proved that in the game – they had a little spell where we had to be vigilant and work hard.”

Although goals from both starting strikers was clearly pleasing, the Gaffer highlighted the team identity shown in the build-up to both strikes.

“Josh scored a nice goal, our way of playing – a nice little build up, and a nice finish. The second goal came in the 90th-odd minute, when it’s a nice time to get it, and it finished the game off nicely to go home 2-0 winners. That was a good Torquay goal as well, where Connor put ‘Whits’ in, and Whitfield pulled it back for Billy, who tucks it away nicely.

“All in all, pleased to be in the quarter finals, and we now look forward to Tuesday’s game against Wealdstone.”

United will find out their opponents in the next round on Monday, with the draw taking place live at 1.30pm on talkSPORT 2.
