Following last weekend’s win over King’s Lynn Town at Plainmoor, Gary Johnson’s men head to North Wales on Saturday to take on Wrexham at The Racecourse Ground.
Who’s the Boss?
Phil Parkinson took over the reigns in North Wales last July, signing a 12 month rolling contract. Parkinson has endured a mixed start so far this term, with a record of four wins, four draws and 3 defeats culminating in Tuesday night’s 3-2 defeat away to Maidenhead.
Parkinson’s playing career spanned over 500 games for Bury and Reading, whilst his managerial spells have seen him take in the likes of Colchester, Hull, Charlton, Bradford – where he led the League Two club to the 2013 League Cup Final – and Bolton – whom he steered to promotion back to the Championship in his first season in charge.
Player to watch
Paul Mullin signed for Wrexham in the summer on a three year deal having turned down a new contract from League One Cambridge United. He has certainly settled in well at his new club, scoring 8 goals in 11 league appearances, the latest coming in Tuesday night’s defeat at Maidenhead.
A successful trial period at Morecambe in 2014 saw Mullin’s career receive the green light, scoring 25 goals in 122 appearances, before a one-season move to Swindon Town followed three years later. Tranmere Rovers was the next port of call for the frontman, with a loan move to Cambridge United in January 2020 preceding a permanent switch to the Abbey Stadium the following summer. 32 goals in 46 appearances last season helped Cambridge seal promotion to League One, and also saw Mullin named as the EFL League Two Player of the Season.
Played for both
Gulls favourite Danny Wright joined Wrexham in the summer of 2011, staying at the club for two seasons, and played the full 120 minutes of Wrexham’s FA Trophy Final game against Grimsby Town.
Danny’s playing career has also taken him to Histon, Cambridge, Forest Green, Gateshead, Kidderminster, Cheltenham and Solihull, before the striker came to United in the summer of 2020, where his goals helps the Gulls to take their EFL bid all the way to the Promotion Final at Ashton Gate.
Previous Encounter
Wrexham 0 – 1 Torquay United 5th April 2021 National League
United struck late to seal a marvellous Easter for The Gulls, as Sam Sherring’s injury-time strike secured a 1-0 win away at Wrexham.
With the game heading for a stalemate, Torquay were rewarded for their persistence as the on-loan defender scored deep into stoppage time to secure their first away at The Racecourse Ground in 33 years.
With the game three minutes into stoppage time, a long throw into the box caused just the chaos it intended – and with Scott Boden’s shot blocked at source, the loose ball fell to straight to Sherring, who rifled the ball into the net via Dibble in the Wrexham goal to seal a hugely valuable three points, with the final whistle sounding shortly after.
