Torquay United AFC is pleased to announce that the Club have agreed an exciting new partnership with Anytime Fitness.
Following on from being unveiled as United’s official short sponsors, Anytime Fitness’ relationship with the Club has been strengthened further with the news that the Paignton-based venue is now the official partner gym for The Gulls’ first team squad.
Run by Noah Wright and Marcus Phillips, the gym on Torquay Road first opened in August 2018, and has since proved hugely popular with users from all across the bay, with its 24/7 opening hours offering unrivalled accessibility, as well providing its members with access to over 160 gyms across the country, and over 4500 gyms worldwide.
The presence of Ben Stubbs, the son of TUAFC legend Robin, as a personal trainer at the gym, only serves to further strengthen the bond between the two parties, with a number of Torquay’s senior players already benefitting from the facilities on offer at the gym.
“The players are in most days at the moment, so there are a lot of them coming in and with the physio, Kai, going through their separate workouts,” said Ben.
“I think at the moment, there’s a few gyms that have opened, that I call more commercialised gyms. Although Anytime Fitness, as a brand, is quite a ‘big name’ gym, a lot of people missed the point that it’s actually a family-run business.
“One thing about our gym which is quite stand-out, is that we’re kind of a community. We make sure that our members are engaging with other members, and I’m thinking with some of those bigger gyms, you might be going in just to train, but you’re going to miss out on that community factor, and I think it’s really important in the gym, to have created that atmosphere.
“Taking nothing away from these other gyms, if that’s what you want to do, and you want to go in just want to train and leave, absolutely fine, but I think for a lot of people joining the gym, it can be quite a daunting experience at first, so by coming into a gym like ours it’s going to feel like more of a community.”
That community spirit was evident at Plainmoor last week, as Stubs jr paid a visit to United’s inaugural Retro Gulls evening in Boots & Laces, to outline some of the physical and mental benefits of leading an active lifestyle.
“It was brilliant. It was good to come in and I think it was really important that I did. I think we managed to engage and enlighten a few people more on the benefits of their health and wellbeing. It’s not about going to the gym, it’s not even about lifting weights or going on a treadmill or anything like that, it’s just about being active and moving.
“One of the biggest things I would say in that situation is going give it a go, and head down there. A special gym like ours is not a daunting gym – you’re not walking in and getting hit in the face by loads of big guys lifting weights.
“Come down, have a chat with the staff members, or a Personal Trainer like myself. When I’m down there, have a chat with me, see what your goals are, and just have a go.”
Speaking about the partnership, Commercial Manager Sharon Musker added:
“It’s great working with a local gym that shares a similar ethos to ourselves for the local community. It was great to see Ben in attendance at the recent Retro Gulls event, and this is another example of us working together, to get the best for Torbay.”
