Thursday night saw the first of United’s new Retro Gulls events, a new community-based initiative from the Club which focuses on promoting health & wellbeing in the over-50s.
Despite the poor weather, a healthy showing from the Yellow Army made their way to Boots & Laces yesterday, and they were rewarded with an enjoyable and informative evening hosted by the Club’s new Community Media Officer, Matt Rogan.
United first-team stars Joe Lewis and Tom Lapslie were on hand to answer questions from the enthusiastic group, before the players pitted their wits against them in a light-hearted but competitive group quiz shortly after.
Anytime Fitness’ Ben Stubbs – son of Gulls legend Robin – then took to the floor to give an insightful talk on the importance of maintaining mental and physical fitness, with our Retro Gulls then provided with a unique opportunity to pose their own individual questions to the personal trainer thereafter.

About Retro Gulls
With the health and wellbeing in residents aged 50 and over widely recognised as another important aspect of community care within Torbay, supporters aged 50 and over will be invited to attend events in Boots & Laces once a month, with United stars present and past due to be in attendance for each meeting.
The Club will be focused on all things Torquay United, and will provide the opportunity to get Torquay talking. These events will give our ‘Retro Gulls’ the chance to discuss the current team, and those of yesteryear, with both fellow supporters and United stars past and present.
The events will vary each month, with future activities set to include fitness sessions, skittles, programme swap-shops, quizzes, bingo, workshops and much more!
Dates for the next two events are as follows:
- Friday 26th November 3-5pm
- Thursday 16th December 5-7pm
