Torquay United Women moved to the top of the South West Regional Women’s League with a comfortable 5-0 win over Royal Wootton Bassett Town.

A dominant first half performance saw United go into the break 4-0 up, thanks to goals from top scorer Ellie Bishop, in form striker Esme Kilburn-Thompson, winger Beth Everson and central midfielder Katie Barriball, before Bishop added a fifth in the second half, to cap off a fine team performance from the Gulls.

United yet again came out of the blocks fast and got the breakthrough after just seven minutes thanks to a good move down the left by Ocean Latto and Bishop, before the winger found Kilburn-Thompson in a central position inside the box for the forward to slot the ball past the visitor’s keeper.

Five minutes later and it was two, Barriball playing a through ball out to the right wing which enabled Everson to cut inside before firing a low drive into the far corner.  Barriball then set up Bishop for her first of the afternoon, with a delightful ball out to the left, which allowed Bishop to beat her defender and shoot low across the advancing keeper and put United three up after twenty minutes.

The goal of the game and arguable one of the goals of the season, came ten minutes before the break when the ball fell to Barriball and her quickness of mind enabled her to flick the ball up while under pressure from two defenders before volleying into the top right-hand corner of the net from 18 yards out, it was a goal that would grace any Women’s Super League game.

With a very high pressing style in the first 45 minutes and a comfortable lead, the second half was always going to be a slightly lower intensity level by the home side, however this exciting young team still managed to create several chances to extend their lead.

Bishop’s second of the game and United’s fifth came in the final ten minutes, when full back Alice Gue found Bishop running through on goal and the winger finishing clinically.

Torquay United Women look to continue their good run of results this coming Sunday 20th February when they travel to third place Ilminster Town Ladies in a 14:00 KO at the Archie Gooch Pavilion.
