The Club was saddened to learn of the recent passing of former Torquay United goalkeeper Gary McGuire.

After winning the FA Amateur Cup with Walthamstow Avenue in 1961, Yorkshireman Gary headed to Australia for a spell with Sydney Hakoah, before a successful trial with Frank O’Farrell’s promotion-chasing United side in February 1966 saw him thrust straight into first-team action following an a injury to regular ‘keeper Terry Adlington.

McGuire instantly won the affections of the Torquay supporters with his inspired displays helping the club to clinch a memorable promotion from Division 4 the following May, before helping the side to establish themselves in their new third-tier surroundings in 1966/67.

Having made 34 appearances for the club during his time at Plainmoor, Gary went on to represent non-League sides Bedford Town and Hastings later in his career. He continued to follow the progress of The Gulls from afar during his retirement though, and was a popular member of the club’s support at the away games which he attended.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to all of Gary’s family and friends at this sad time.
