United ended what was becoming an excruciating wait for a win on Tuesday night with an emphatic 4-0 win over Maidenhead United.

A fantastic first 45 minutes was capped by goals from Josh McQuoid, Luke Young, Rhys Murphy, and Jamie Reid. The Yellow Army were happy with the performance but they will be wanting more, and United need more points on the board.

“It was a great performance, especially in the first half,” said Torquay United head coach Gary Owers in his press call on Thursday. “It is going to give them a boost in confidence. I felt as if it gave the supporters a lift. It is definitely better going into training when you have won a game.

“I enjoyed Tuesday. It is nice when you are in that position, comfortable in the game. It is only three points and we require many, many more points to move up the league.

“Everyone is higher up the league than we are, unfortunately. We’ve played Macclesfield and all of a sudden they have gone top. We have played Dagenham and they are in the top two or three. Dover is another tough game but if we can reach the level and standard that we reached the other night then we’ll give anyone a game. We’re playing at home tomorrow, and we fear no-one.

“The players have got nothing to be scared of. On any particular day in this league it is eleven versus eleven. Three of four points cover the top twelve positions so I believe. It is competitive, so if we do our jobs properly then we’ve got a chance.

Dover Athletic missed out narrowly on the play-offs last season, but they have started this campaign very well indeed. They sit in second place after having claimed 25 points from 14 games. Ex-Torquay United player Giancarlo Gallifuoco has been an important member of Dover’s squad having scored three goals, including one in their last match, a 2-2 draw against Sutton United.

United go into Saturday’s match with an improving injury list. The only players out of contention are Sam Chaney, Jake Gosling, Jordan Lee, and Yan Klukowski.
