With TUAFC reaching its fundraising target for Torbay Hospital earlier this year, Lewis Collins & Jack Stobbs this week paid a visit to the Louisa Cary Ward to witness the new equipment in action.

The Louisa Cary children’s ward at Torbay Hospital cares for a number of children aged between 0-18 with any medical, surgical or psychological conditions requiring inpatient care.

With a new monitor to measure a child’s carbon dioxide levels quickly being identified as a priority by the Ward, Torquay United AFC challenged everyone connected with the Club – players, staff and, of course, the Yellow Army – to unite together in aid of this worthy cause.

With proceeds from last December’s FA Cup Shirt and February’s Signed Football raffles both being donated towards this very special project, the Club was delighted to reach the target required in order to purchase this vital piece of equipment, with the monitor directly benefitting child patients on the ward.

With the installation of the monitor now complete, United stars Stobbs and Collins visited the High Dependency Unit to watch Sister Janet Sykes giving a demonstration of how the equipment works with the help of a training dummy, which mimics the young patients who will benefit most from the Ward’s new addition.

Janet, on behalf of all the staff on the Ward, expressed her gratitude for the support shown by the whole TUAFC family, before explaining how much of an impact their generosity will ultimately have in years to come.

“We would like to send a very big thank you to the Torquay United players, fans, and staff for their very generous donation, which has allowed us to purchase a carbon dioxide monitor to use on our High Dependency Unit ward.

“This monitor will make a big difference to the care our children receive when they are very sick, as it allows the medical team to monitor their carbon dioxide levels, a critical part of information in a child’s medical treatment plan.”

After spending some time with patients and their families based on the Ward, Lewis and Jack reflected on how the Club’s fundraising has directly benefitted the local community.

“We came into Torbay Hospital to have a look at the new monitor that has been purchased through fundraising for the hospital,” began Lewis.

“It’s really nice for me and Jack to see what goes on inside, and how much of a difference the fundraising money can actually make for the Hospital, because it can save many lives in that sense and it’s really, really, nice to see.”

Jack was equally pleased to see everyone’s combined efforts paying off.

“It’s nice to see where the money goes that is fundraised, and how much it can make a difference to many young children and whoever needs it going forward.

“It’s nice to see what it goes towards”

TUAFC would like to take the opportunity to place on record its thanks to all supporters who put bids in on auction items, purchased raffle tickets and donated to the fundraising initiative, with the crucial monitor now in place on the Louisa Cary Ward at Torbay Hospital.
