TUWFC are looking forward to the season ahead, after receiving their National League fixtures on Monday.

24 hours earlier, the Women had opened up their pre-season schedule with a tough encounter against Cardiff City LFC, with the Welsh side running out clear winners at Paignton Academy on Sunday afternoon.

Director of Football Steve Elswood felt the match served as a worthwhile test, despite the scoreline.

“It was great to be back out there yesterday, and for all the ladies to have their first pre-season game.

“Cardiff are an exceptional side and I’m sure will perform creditably in tier 3 this season, and had internationals in their starting 11. They do challenge you in every area of the pitch.

“However, there were lots of positives to take, we were able to play 6 trialists during, with a couple only playing their first bit of pre-season work since the summer period. They all performed strongly and showed some good insights into their game. We’ll be hopeful of announcing some more new signings towards the end of the week following on from the match. The coaching team were able to rotate throughout the squad & made plenty of formation changes, which, at end of the day is the aim in pre season games.”

With that test behind them, the focus now is to draw a line under last year’s success, and look ahead to a full fixture list of National League football.

“Cardiff put us to the test and under pressure from the start which is what we wanted. We did however create plenty of our own chances which we were unable to put away, but with a bit more sharpness I’m sure we will do.

“Overall the game allowed us to press the reset button on last season, see levels close-up of Cardiff, and make sure we all now need to aspire to these, and those key areas of our own game that we need to develop and sharpen over next few friendlies.

“We rest up and re-group for game number 2 this Sunday at home to Map Ladies FC at Devon FA, Coach Road with a 2pm kick off.”
