At Boots & Laces on Sunday, United favourites of the past were back together again in support of Gulls star Paul Holmes, and what an occasion it turned out to be!

Following the sad news of Paul’s recent cancer diagnosis, the ‘Footballing Family’ reacted in typical style, by uniting together to support of one of their own yesterday, with a lively Q&A session followed up by a fundraising auction that saw a whole host of superb items donated from local businesses, football clubs and individuals generating a large number of generous bids within the packed-out room.

The fundraising entertainment continued thereafter, with a game of Heads & Tails preceding a prize raffle that saw lucky winners bagging themselves some excellent prizes, safe in the knowledge that all funds raised were going to a very worthy cause.

Although it was as a member of United’s 1991 promotion-winning side that Holmes is probably best remembered by Gulls fans, Paul’s stellar playing career included two four-year stints at Plainmoor between 1988-1992 and 1999-2003, as well as taking in spells at Doncaster, Birmingham, West Brom and of course, Premier League giants, Everton.

Yesterday former Plainmoor teammates Darren Moore, Paul Smith, Robbie Herrera, Sean Joyce, Russell Musker, Richard Thompson, John Uzzell, Phil Lloyd, Ken Veysey and Tom Kelly all took  to the stage to pay tribute to ‘Holmesy’, as well as share their own individual memories and stories from what was undoubtedly a very special dressing room!

Torquay United AFC would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody involved for making the event such a success, with our gratitude extended to all those who volunteered, attended, provided items for auction / raffle, and also to those purchased raffle tickets.
