Torquay United’s long-standing partnership with Wollens will scale new heights today, as both parties unite for our latest Community Day at Plainmoor.

The clash against Altrincham – which will also be screened live by BT Sport – will once again see members of the local community descend upon Plainmoor as guests of the Club, with grassroots teams from around Torbay this time the beneficiaries. For Wollens, a local law firm that has a long proud history of supporting community sport, it serves as the perfect opportunity to not only strengthen the bond between themselves, the Football Club, and the wider community, but also play a starring role in showing the watching television audience what Torbay is all about!

Chris Hart, Chief Executive of Wollens, spoke of his enthusiasm regarding the latest highlight in partnership with TUAFC.

“As a policy, we like to be involved in grassroots sport, we’re involved in a lot of sports within the general sporting community, from netball through to cricket, and everything in-between. So, the fact that there is community involved is a really good thing.

“We were keen to sponsor the away end, because obviously, all the home fans look at the away end, whereas other parts of the ground, you sometimes miss some of the home fans. The fact that it’s used for the Community Days is really good, because as we know, not all the teams bring that many fans away so why not? I think it’s a really good use, and it’s a good thing for the Club to be associated with as well.

“The Wollens Terrace is always quite prominent when we’re on TV anyway, so that’s also good!”

With a partnership that produces benefits for both parties, Michelle Pugh, Marketing Manager at Wollens explained how working with TUAFC helps gives the firm unique exposure amongst potential clients, in addition to highlighting their commitment to the community.

“It’s a really good fit for us, because the people that Torquay United attracts, in the stands, are our clients or potential clients.

“We hope that they see our name, and if they have a need, will contact us.”

Torquay United AFC would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Wollens, with Gulls players Tom Lapslie and Aaron recently paying a visit to their eye-catching premises on Torquay harbourside to meet one of the Club’s most prominent and loyal sponsors face-to-face, with both players taking the opportunity to praise the firm for their support.

“It means a lot, especially when they are community-based,” said Tom.

“It means a lot to the fans, the people, and the team, and it’s very important to us.”

Emphasising the value of local partnerships, Aaron added:

“Especially for smaller sized clubs, being community-based, and local, helps. It generates a lot of support for the Club, and as a Club we appreciate that support.”

With up to 1,000 grassroots guests expected to attend for the match, Practice Director Clive Meredith sees this as an excellent opportunity to embrace two of Wollen’s key passions – local community and local sport.

“It’s definitely the love of sport – without a doubt – because it brings people together.

“Whether you’re playing for a cricket team at grassroots level, or for Torquay United with thousands of fans coming through the door, there’s a community feel, and our policy for the firm has always been to support local communities, where they gather, and to invest into them. It’s very important to us as a business, it’s not just about making money for us, it’s about putting back into the communities, because without their support, we wouldn’t have a business anyway. It’s a real passion of ours.

“The highest profile is Torquay United, and that’s important to us, because that’s where our headquarters is.”

With kick-off for the big game edging ever closer, it was left to Clive to provide a prediction.

His verdict? 2-0 to Torquay!
