The long wait was finally over for United’s youngsters on Monday, as the Club’s stars of the future returned to training.

It was an exciting evening for all the players and their parents involved, as South Devon College played host to all age groups from Under-9 to Under-16 level, with Torquay United Head of Youth Chris Todd delighted to be in attendance.

“Everything went smoothly, this kids were buzzing to be back, as you can imagine,” began Todd.

“It was a lovely evening for it, it was very nice. The parents were great – bringing the kids along, sticking to the Covid rules. It was all a little bit different, but apart from that, it all went smoothly and we’re really pleased.”

It wasn’t just the players who were raring to get going after the extended break, with Chris also paying tribute to the enthusiasm and commitment of the various youth team coaches.

“I think the coaches were just as excited as the players to be honest! It’s been  long time, and they’re just really happy to be back doing something they love, and giving the kids the opportunity to train again, which is brilliant.

“We’ll be bedding them in a little bit, obviously because they’ve been away for so long. A lot of them have being doing bits behind closed doors, but we’ll be working on their fitness and just getting their game and match practice back to standard. That’s the key to it.

“The Under 18s return on Thursday. The league is looking to start in the next coming weeks and extend it into the summer, so they’ll be back up and running.”

A resumption in competitive action will now doubt be music to the ears for those involved, however following what has been a incredibly testing period for everyone, Chris was clear where the focus should be right now.

“It’s been a long time and they’ve had all that against them. It’s been difficult for them to deal with the situation, so I think the enjoyment level is the most important thing really.”
