Everybody at Torquay United AFC would like to congratulate United’s Women for winning the Devon Women’s Premier Cup for the first time in their history.

Despite having to overcome a number of obstacles in the build-up to the final – including playing the final against higher-division opponents without a recognised goalkeeper – Steve Elswood’s team deservedly emerged triumphant against Exeter City on penalty kicks to take the silverware.

The Yellow Army – many of whom travelled to support the girls at Coach Road for the final – will have their own opportunity to pay tribute to the team at Plainmoor against Maidenhead on Saturday, April 30th (3pm KO), with the players invited to attend the match as guests of honour by the Club, and a presentation taking place at half-time.

Giving his reaction to the victory at full-time, manager Elswood praised his side’s character.

“They are just the most amazing bunch of women, I’m in shock to be fair!

“We always knew we had one little effort in us, and as time is ticking by, you start to question if it was going to come, and it just did. Even with the penalties, we’ve been practising them all week.”

Sasha Mole, whose starring role as stand-in goalkeeper saw her deservedly named Player of the Match, was understandably delighted to play her part in rounding off the team’s season of promise with tangible success.

“It’s been unbelievable, I’m speechless,” said Mole.

“That’s what we’re good at, sticking behind each other. We never give up, that’s not in our nature. I think all the support we’ve had – from the men with their messages, even the Gaffer, them speaking and doing those little videos for us gave us an extra boost, and the fans here tonight have been amazing.

”We couldn’t have asked for any more.”
