In their penultimate pre-season fixture, League One side Exeter City provide Gary Johnson’s side with their next test on Saturday.

Following on from Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Championship side Plymouth Argyle, in which United came from behind with a Brad Ash leveller forcing a draw – next up for the side are Gary Caldwell’s Exeter side.

Who’s the Boss?

Gary Caldwell joined Exeter City as First Team Manager on October 24.

Gary, 40, joined the club on a long term contract, with the former Celtic and Scotland defender, most recently assistant manager at Hibernian.

Prior to his appointment at Hibs, Gary managed Partick Thistle and Chesterfield; these appointments followed a stint as manager of Wigan who he led to a successful promotion to the Championship.

Player to Watch

Sonny Cox is a two footed, goalscoring striker who initially  emerged as part of the Academy U16 squad.

Sonny was regularly involved with the under-18 squad during the 2019/20 season and progressed into the First Team training squad since returning for the 2020/21 season.

Scoring his first senior goal for the Club in the 2-4 defeat against Oxford last year, Cox has also enjoyed productive loan spells at Weston-super-Mare and Bath City.

Played for Both

Austrian goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik was a firm favourite for both clubs, after choosing an unusual route to ply his trade in Devon.

After initially failing to make the grade at Aston Villa, a century of games at Falkirk prompted Gulls boss Martin Ling to take him south of the border, with his superb performances between the sticks earning Torquay a play-off place, and him a move up the footballing ladder to Peterborough in 2012.

Three years later, and Bobby returned to the county, albeit this time in East Devon, as he made 63 league outings for rivals Exeter.

Exeter City 1 – 2 Torquay United AFC, 21st April 2014, League Two

Knowing that defeat would seal the end of their Football League existence, a 2-1 win at St James Park may have not been enough to ultimately save their status, but it did salvage their pride by postponing the inevitable. Goalscorers Courtney Cameron & Ashley Yeoman were the heroes of the hour for United, after Scot Bennett put the home side in front.
