With United making an excellent start to the 2020/21 season, today saw two members of The Gulls’ squad receive recognition for their outstanding contributions to the previous campaign.

Back in July, the Yellow Army selected Ben Whitfield and Ben Wynter as the worthy recipients of the Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season awards respectively, with Torbay’s naturally inspiring newspaper, Torbay Weekly, hosting the official vote via their website.

Manager Gary Johnson paid tribute to both players.

“Congratulations to them both, very well deserved. They were a big part of the first team last year, and have carried that on this year. They are two great club men that give their all for the cause and we appreciate that, which is testament to winning their awards.”

Both Bens were pleased to receive their individual awards, and thanked the Torquay faithful for their show of support.

“I’m very happy to win the Young Player of the Season award,” said Wynter.

“I’m very grateful to everyone that voted for me, thank you.”

Torquay’s new Player of the Season Whitfield was equally delighted, and paid a similar tribute to United supporters.

“I’m honoured to win the Player of the Season award, thank you to all the fans that voted for me.

“I didn’t expect it, and I’m very grateful.”

Torbay Weekly editor Jim Parker, meanwhile, congratulated both players on earning their awards.

Everybody at Plainmoor will be hoping that the end of 2020/21 will prompt even more celebrations, for everybody associated with the club.

For now though, well done Whits and Wynts!
